Sunshine Meadows Sightseeing Gondola & Chairlift
The alpine zone of the Canadian Rockies is a pretty powerful place. Above treeline, the views extend in every direction to rugged ridges and mountain peaks. The Banff Sunshine Sightseeing Gondola and Mt. Standish Sightseeing Chairlift offer an unbeatably speedy way to get straight to the alpine, which is a win for experienced hikers as well as first-time alpine visitors.
As you ride smoothly up to 8,000 feet above sea level, the mountain views appear layer upon layer all the way to the horizon. Follow the meandering pathway to the Standish Viewing Deck where you can look down on three vividly blue lakes. If the trails beyond the lookout are calling to you (and don’t be surprised if they do) then take a self-led or guided hike through these alpine meadows.

Local Tips
Hiking routes at Sunshine Meadows range from 30 minutes to 5+ hours. Keep an eye on the time to catch the last Gondola down by 6 pm.
Up here in the alpine, you’re naturally more exposed to the elements so make sure a hat and rain gear are in your backpack.
Being wildlife aware is a key part of every hike in the Rockies, which includes having bear spray handy. Pick some up in town before leaving for the Gondola, and don’t be shy to ask for tips on how to use it.
Our favourite time of year at Sunshine Meadows is late July when wildflowers bloom and light up the landscape.
